Inclusion

Inclusion

Access should be a right. Inclusion should be the starting point.

What would we change if we stopped asking the child to fit?

The position

Inclusion is usually treated as a response — something arranged after a child has been identified as different.

It works better as a condition: built into the environment, the classroom, communication, materials and expectations from the beginning, so that no child has to earn entry into a space that was designed without them.

Communication is not limited to speech. Participation is not limited to a single pace. Belonging is not something a child should have to negotiate.
